Role Overview 

The IR/ER Coordinator supports the effective management of industrial relations, employee relations, and performance management systems within a unionized mining construction environment. This role ensures compliance with labour laws, collective agreements, and organizational policies while coordinating employee contracts, recruitment processes, and performance management frameworks.

  • Strong understanding of labour legislation, union agreements, and performance management systems. 
  • Proficiency in HRIS platforms and Microsoft Office. LabourNet will be advantageous.

Responsible For
Key Responsibilities 
  1. Industrial Relations (IR) Coordination
  • Union Liaison: Manage day-to-day interactions with union representatives, including grievance resolution, collective bargaining support, and adherence to labour agreements. 
  • Compliance: Ensure alignment with labour laws (e.g., LRA, BCEA), union protocols, and organizational policies. 
  • Conflict Resolution: Facilitate mediation, disciplinary hearings, and dispute resolution processes. 
  • Documentation: Maintain records of union correspondence, agreements, and dispute resolutions. 
  1. Employee Relations (ER) Coordination
  • Employee Engagement: Address employee concerns, resolve workplace conflicts, and promote positive labour relations. 
  • Policy Implementation: Communicate HR policies (e.g., code of conduct, leave management) and ensure adherence. 
  • ER Investigations: Conduct investigations into workplace misconduct or complaints. 
  1. Performance Management System Coordination
  • Framework Development: Assist in designing and updating performance management policies, tools (e.g., KPIs, competency frameworks), and evaluation processes. 
  • Implementation: Train managers on performance management procedures and ensure consistency in goal-setting, mid-year reviews, and annual evaluations. 
  • Data Management: Track performance metrics, identify trends, and provide insights to improve employee productivity. 
  • Compliance: Ensure alignment with organizational goals, labour laws, and union agreements. 
  1. Employee Contract Management
  • Contract Administration: Draft, review, and manage employment contracts, ensuring compliance with labour laws and organizational standards. 
  • Renewals/Terminations: Coordinate contract renewals, terminations, or amendments in consultation with line managers and legal teams. 
  • Documentation: Maintain centralized records of contracts, amendments, and terminations. 
  1. Recruitment Support & Employment Offer Management
  • Offer Process Coordination: Draft employment offers, verify terms (salary, benefits, probation periods), and ensure alignment with union agreements and organizational policies. 
  • Contractual Compliance: Confirm that offers adhere to labour laws and collective bargaining agreements. 
  • Onboarding: Collaborate with hiring managers to finalize onboarding steps post-offer acceptance. 
  1. Documentation & Reporting
  • Record-Keeping: Maintain accurate, auditable records of IR/ER activities, contracts, performance data, and recruitment offers. 
  • Reporting: Prepare reports for HR leadership on IR trends, performance metrics, and compliance gaps.

Educational Requirements
  • Education: Diploma or degree in Industrial Relations, Human Resources, or related field. 
  • Experience: Minimum 3–5 years in IR/ER, preferably in a unionized mining or construction environment. 
  • Certifications: Knowledge of labour laws (e.g., LRA, BCEA) and collective bargaining frameworks.
